Flavor from the Past: The Cherry Icee

This is a nostalgic post.

When I was a kid I remember getting Icee's.  It was a treat, and the only place in town was at the local Kmart.  At the front of the store sat a little booth/cart of sorts, and there you could get Icee's.  Was anything else sold there? No idea, because all I wanted was an Icee.

The past has moved on.  Kmart went out of business in my hometown a loooong time ago.  I just got done looking at a Google map of Porterville in satellite typography mode, and so much is unrecognizable.  Seems like there's been a lot of change in the last 20 years.  I can't figure out where the Kmart even was.  Fractured memories.  And sometimes I wonder if childhood memories can even been trusted.  But I remember that stand.  And I remember how lucky I felt drinking the Icee. 

With all the change, it's just kinda nice drinking the familiar drink.  These days I don't get it at a grocery store but at the movie theater, and super occasionally at Burger King.  Those are the only places I know that sells them.

Now the only trick is to not drink the whole thing before the movie trailers are finished playing.

Snoopy Made Me Buy a Drink

 Yes, putting Snoopy on a can made me try Milkis, a South Korean drink that combines soda with milk.  The idea of milk in a drink sounds pretty gross, but being the Peanuts loving fan that I am I had to try it.  While drinking it yesterday I realized that the taste was familiar.  It reminded me of Italian soda!  And what's Italian soda?  Cream and soda.  Heh.  So I guess milk in a fizzy drink isn't so bad after all.

Though, sort of the same topic, I love how cool Snoopy is in Asian countries.  It surprised me during my two visits to Japan, expecting to see Mickey everywhere, which he kinda was, but Snoopy was more visible.  Love that dog. :0)

Peach Coca-Cola, My Favorite Drink Discovery in Japan

 If there's one thing I really miss from Japan it's all the vending machines.  They're everywhere and so nice and convenient.  And one thing you can find in vending machines is a good variety of drinks.

Of course not speaking or reading fluent Japanese can come as a hindrance, as a lot of the drinks are mysteries.  I got this one drink at the Boarderless Exhibit thinking it was water, it said Aqua, but it was a slightly sweet sports drink.  A total surprise.

Also, something else Japan is known for are limited edition items.  I found this Peach Coca-Cola at a vending machine in Ginza, and it was so tasty!  So good!  But it's also a limit edition flavor, so even if I lived in Japan this drink is short lived.

It's probably a good thing Peach Coke isn't a thing in the States, though . . . do those multi option soda machines have peach as an option?  Okay, I probably shouldn't find out.  I've been very good not drinking soda this year, and did slip up in Japan due to awesomeness of options.  It's not fun always getting water from vending machines that have so many cool choices.

But seriously, Peach Coca-Cola is so good.
